the big & small (short) man (how to dress to impress)

Some good tips for the big and short man! Is this you? Check out our online store and we may be able to help.

the thriving (not starving) artist

copyImageThe big and small man. You either know him, or are him. Did you ever identify with Skeelo when he sang “I wish I was a little bit taller”, while feeling rounder than the average bear? Do you tend to buy oversized clothes to disguise your size? Did you know that that just makes you look ridiculously bigger and shorter?!

While you can’t make yourself taller and becoming slim may take some time, you should love the skin you’re in. And I’m going to share some tips that’ll help.

1. The tailor is your best friend!! This actually goes for everyone; a well tailored outfit can turn you from a zero to hero. The trick is to get a piece of clothing (shirt, pants etc.) that fits the biggest part of your body and get the rest of that garment tailored to your body.

Sam Worthington: Aussie Guy with Style

11

In his latest film, Drift, Sam Worthington returns to his roots by not only starring in his first wholly Australian made film since his breakout role in the uber-hit Avatar, but also by playing a surfer in Western Australia where the Aussie actor was raised.

A NIDA graduate born in Surrey, England but brought up in Perth, Worthington exudes and effortless everyman vibe in both his acting and dress sense.

sam-worthington-tshirtNot afraid to don a sharp suit for an important premier, it’s pretty clear that our Sam is most sam-worthington-in-brown-polocomfortable in a relaxed t shirt and jeans. This laid-back, tough bloke exterior is said to have been what attracted James Cameron to cast him in Avatar. At the time, Worthington had been going through somewhat of a life crisis, selling all his belongings and living in his car. He had forged a decent career in Australian films, but was hungry for something more. It was around this period of soul searching that he auditioned for a film he knew nothing about and got the call back. It turned out to be for Avatar, the most successful motion picture of all time.

In Drift, Worthington gets to do what he loves most, make a film with mates he grew up with and play a character most like himself, someone who would rather walk around in casual clothes and swimwear than red carpet tuxedo’s.

And that is what we find most appealing about Sam onscreen and off. It comes as no surprise that before getting into acting, he was a no-nonsense bricklayer, a guy who epitomised the rough and rugged Aussie style, and it is that side of him that still comes through today.

His ability to look smart in a sharp mens suit and dress shirt while also not afraid to rough it in a pair of shorts and t shirt is something you rarely see in other self-conscious, image-obsessed Hollywood stars.

All of us here at The Significant Man are pretty chuffed to welcome our good friend Mason Hell-Cat to the fold. We will be syndicating regular beer reviews from his terrific beer review blog, the aptly titled “Mason Hell-Cat’s Beer Blog“. Be sure to head on over and check out his site. You’ll find a healthy archive of the most extensive and wide ranging beer reviews on the internet.

First up for us though, is one of our favourite brews here at The Significant Man; Little Creatures Pale Ale. Over to you Hell-Cat!

Case price: Approx. $60.00AU

What the label really means: N/A

The Hell-Cat review starts here

Label: I love this label for its sheer simplicity. It’s not over-crowded, it’s not tacky, it’s just simple, honest to goodness design at its finest. The little cupid character clutching a big glass of foaming beer has become iconic in Australia and instantly recognisable as the logo for the Little Creatures Brewing company. It has a touch of elegance, a touch of class. It’s a label that I am proud to hold.

I give it a label rating of 8 out of 10.

AROMA: Delicious…there is a gentle waft of mellow Summer fruits that rises up, tucks you into bed and gives you a goodnight kiss on the forehead.

Taste: GLASS – One of my all time favourite beers, it is an absolute pleasure to be reviewing Little Creatures Pale Ale for my 100th review. It’s a fresh, thirst quenching ale with a pleasing back of the mouth burst of bitterness. I have had this brew dozens of times before but on this tasting I am noticing a subtle nuttiness that flows through. It’s smooth, it’s delicious, it takes me away to a better place – of rainbows, star-drops, and midgets on ponies.

I give it a beer from glass rating of out of 10.

Taste: BOTTLE – Drinking this from the bottle it appears to pack more of an all-mouth punch and becomes a little more flavour intense. Just as good, just as refreshing, just as memorable. My only drawback is the distinct absence of the nostril surrounding aroma.

I give it a taste from bottle rating of 8.5 out of 10.

A word from the wife: ‘Smooth, delicious and irresistible…just like my man’

She gave it a taste rating of 9 out of 10.

Song of choice: Try this along side the Foo Fighters’ ‘Everlong‘

Accompanying food: A grilled seafood platter with plenty of lemon would make this an arvo barbie in cupid-driven heaven.

Best season to appreciate: It’s definitely a good thirst quencher – Summer!

All-nighter beer? Absolutely! This was the beer of choice for me at my wedding so it’s tried and tested.

Don’t Adjust Your Screens – It’s Jimmy Stuart Shirts!

Jimmy Stuart 1We get pretty excited when a new batch of Jimmy Stuart shirts come in. No other brand is producing shirts as bold and dazzling as these guys. A real credit to a young Australian company looking to make a big splash in the menswear market.

Not afraid to make shirts that are brimming with bright colours and featuring spectacular, often eye-popping designs, Jimmy Stuart clearly understand that not all big and tall men are afraid of stepping out in audacious, confident clothing.

It is this “Big, Loud and Proud” attitude that we love here at The Significant Man, and we know the Jimmy Stuart brand is onto a winner with this new range they have released.

In keeping with the Jimmy Stuart tradition, they have included several big, loud shirts full of colour and stylish patterns, but this time they have included several more subtle designs and tones for king size guys looking to add some sophistication to their casual wardrobe.

Perhaps the most impressive element of all Jimmy Stuart shirts is the quality. It would be easy to produce such bold designs and cuts using inferior materials, but instead, all of Jimmy Stuart’s shirts are crafted with pure precision, and made from only the highest quality fabrics. Put simply, these shirts are built with passion and designed to last for years.

Here’s just a taste of the new shirts:

Great Scott! He Did it!

adam-scott

It’s been a long wait, but thanks to Adam Scott, Australia has its first green jacket! The 32 year old snapped up victory with a nail-biting pressure putt to take out the prestigious US Masters and become the first Aussie to win the tournament in its 77 year history.

The Significant Man crew couldn’t be happier about Scott’s win, especially since us Aussies are all used to seeing this at the Masters:

greg-norman

Yep, that’s Greg Norman’s infamous “Shark Tank” from the 1996 US Masters when he somehow gave up a 6 stroke lead to hand the green jacket to Nick Faldo.

Those were some dark days for Aussie golf lovers…dark days indeed…

…But lets put that behind us and celebrate this:

Dress to Impress for Career Success

DRESS FOR THE JOB YOU WANT

Knowing how to dress appropriately for the job you want is crucial for any man, but for big and tall guys, the real challenge is to find the correct sized clothes that will not only compliment your shape and height, but be a good match for your chosen profession.

These days, dressing for work isn’t always as straightforward as throwing on a suit and tie, grabbing your briefcase and heading out the door. While that may still be the case for many, there are now changes to what we wear to our daily jobs. Creative careers have bred more creative styles in which smart casual clothing has become the norm for many workplaces.

If you choose a creative Casual Work Wearprofession, your daily outfit can vary widely. It is hard to go past mens jackets or dress shirts, but even wearing a well chosen ensemble of large size t-shirt and jeans can create a great look. Allow your creative side to come through in your work-wear by adding a few dashes of colour here and there. Don’t be afraid to accessorize with bold colours and patterns that will expose your inner confidence.

For most us though, the professional look is still mandatory for our chosen career. For big and tall guys, this doesn’t mean we have to be boring and choose dull, lifeless ensembles. There are some things big men need to remember when choosing a Professional Work Wearprofessional outfit.

It is always wise to go with dark coloured, large mens suits and mix it with a lighter business shirt. A good suit should be cut to flatter your figure. Avoid tight suits that constrict your movement. Choose a well fitted suit that skims the body without hugging it or flapping over it.

The same goes for a business shirt. It should not be too tight or too loose, but fall over the body just right, without you having to tug at it or constantly re-tuck it into your trousers.

Light, breathable fabrics that keep you cool under pressure are also essential for larger men. Avoid oversize collars that attract unnecessary attention to the neck.

Smart Work WearYour plus size pants should follow a similar principal and not be baggy, they should be cut perfectly to respect your shape. Avoid pleats as they can draw attention to a big stomach. Straight cut trousers can create an elongated look for your legs while pants with a relaxed waist that stretches can provide superior comfort.

All in all, what you choose to wear to work can determine how well you do your job. It’s important to look your best but be comfortable and allow your inner confidence to shine through.

Fashion Tips for Big & Tall Men

Big mens

Knowing how to dress in accordance with your body type is the secret to not only capturing your own distinct style, but also feeling great about yourself. In this day and age, your size and shape should never hold you back as there are retailers out there that cater to big and tall men, allowing you to feel confident and stylish no matter what your size.

With this in mind, it is important to learn a few basic rules. Simply grabbing clothes off the rack will lead to unflattering results. There are easy tips to remember that will make a big difference and have you looking and feeling your best all year round.

TIPS FOR BIG & TALL MEN

KNOW THY SIZE:Size Chart

You wouldn’t buy a pair of shoes without knowing your foot size. The same goes for the rest of your body. Before your search for clothes even begins, it is important to know the measurements for your chest, neck, sleeves, waist and inseam. This will guarantee your shopping experience will be more efficient and raise your chances of finding clothes that compliment your size and shape.

BE WARY OF STRIPES:

Stripes can be your friend or your foe. The rule to remember is that anything not vertical may make you look bigger. That means horizontal, diagonal or any other strange variStriped shirtation will likely do a big man no justice. Best to stick with vertical stripes as they create an elongated effect and can result in a slimming look. Pinstriped shirts with dark jeans or dress pants is always a great look. For tall, skinnier men the opposite is true. A horizontal striped polo shirt can make you look broader in the shoulders and create a flattering physique by giving you some extra bulk.

BALANCE YOUR COLOURS:

Two striking mixes of contrasting colours can divide a big man up and draw attention to unflattering parts of your body. Best to balance your colours and try to keep your shirts and pants similar in tone to create a cleaner, slimming impression. There is no denying that black does make you look thinner, but nobody is stopping you from breaking up the dark tone with a few nifty colour accessories. Once again, tall guys should approach this in reverse. An all black ensemble can make you look even taller and thinner than you may be, so mixing it up with colours can only work in favour of a tall man.

FIND YOUR FIT:

Big and tall men indexcommonly suffer from two misconceptions. Big guys believe tight-fitting clothing will flatten their bulky areas and create a smoother look. In truth, this merely draws attention to those sections you are trying to hide. Others are of the opinion that loose-fitting, baggy clothes will hide excess flab, when in reality they make you look bigger than you are. Tall skinny guys mistakenly choose baggy items that create a flapping effect, or skin-tight items that look awkward.  The solution for both big and tall men is to find your middle ground. Avoid too tight or too baggy. It is important to go with well-fitted clothing that sits comfortably on the body and complements your size and shape without drawing unnecessary attention to the parts you are looking to conceal. Remember to measure up and know your size.

Being a big and tall guy is by no means a disadvantage when it comes to fashion. Thanks to a number ofretailers that caterto large-sized men, you can now be confident no matter what size or shape you are. No two people are the same and being comfortable in your own skin is the key to a happy, fulfilling life.

Buying for Big & Tall Men Gets a Whole Lot Easier

Christmas deals and new sizing charts released!

This Christmas marks a new beginning for big and tall men around Australia. No longer do they have to politely put up with clothing gifts that are several sizes too small for them. Buying for large size men has become a whole lot easier thanks to Ron Bennett Big Mens Clothing.

In the past, purchasing a new shirt or pair of jeans for the plus size man in your life came with a series of headaches. Big men can be shy about revealing their size so you often had to take a wild guess and buy clothing for them based on what size you think they are. This can lead to a number of problems. You may buy that T shirt or polo that is way too big, risking them becoming embarrassed at just how over-sized you consider them to be. Or you may buy the item of clothing that is several sizes too small. This can lead to further embarrassment when they try on the clothes and find they simply don’t fit.

When shopping online for clothes at Ron Bennett Big Mens, you can utilize our free sizing chart that can give you a better understanding of how big that man in your life may be. There are clear visual guides and even videos describing how to measure a big and tall man so you never need to face the awkwardness of buying presents that are too big or too small ever again.
